Del Mar Garden Club was formed in September 1988 by Marnie Mahoney.

Her original letter to interested friends read:

“Your response to the idea of a garden group in Del Mar has been most enthusiastic, and listed below are our members so far … Bette Coates, Jill Coughlin, Connie Geritz, Peg Hawkins, Rosanne Holliday, Karen Lockwood, Ginny Melvin, Sue Nutter, Suzy Rau, Marian Staver, Pat Stroud, Linda Teague – lots of talent here!  During the summer months I shall continue to research how a worthwhile group should operate, and I will hopefully be able to organize and schedule some interesting meetings and field trips for the fall and following months.  We will not meet during the summers.  As fall approaches, I will contact you for our first organizational meeting when we must decide on a few necessary particulars.
